Three exciting chess tournaments attended by members this month...
Firstly, two members attended the Paighton Congress 2018 Torquay, staying at the Livermead House Hotel. This was a morning tournament lasting 5 days, commencing Monday 3 September till Friday 7 September. Myself and Paul Bland played in the under 135 grading section, with some very hard fought games and although we didn't win we had an enjoyable chess tournament. I scored 3.5-5, Paul 1.5-5. It's not all about winning, as competing at this competitive tournament gives you invaluable experience when playing for Bournemouth in the local league. All credit to any one who takes on this challenge.
On Wednesday 12 September the Two Towns match was played at Poole chess club. Six members competed: myself, Derek Jones, Andrew Alderton, John Oldfield, Phil Sorensen and Ivan Willis. Great games had by all, with Phil scoring a good win over Simon Paterson and I drew against Tim Joyce. Poole won this year against Bournemouth 17/12. Again i'd like to say this is an excellent tournament, giving club players ungraded games prior to the start of the season.
Lastly this Sunday (16 Sept) was the 2nd Dorset Blitz Championship at Wareham. Myself and Paul Jackson represented Bournemouth in a very strong intermediate section, scores on the Dorset Chess website. Although we both struggled, we acquitted ourselves well, playing some great games. Only ten minutes on the clock meant 9 games on the day, which is very challenging. We both had a great time and thanks to the organisers for a brilliant chess event.
